 Sūrat al-ʿAṣrQur’an

Bismillāhir Raḥmānir Raḥīm

The Divine Oath by Time declaring the universal loss of humanity save those united in faith, action, truth, and patience.

[103.1a] By Time (وَٱلْعَصْرِ, Wa-l-ʿaṣr, ওয়াল-‘আসর; ʿ-ṣ-r, ‘to press/squeeze’ → the declining day/epoch, [Divine oath; urgency of fleeing time])

[103.2a] Indeed, mankind (إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ, Inna-l-insāna, ইন্না আল-ইনসান; ʾ-n-s, ‘to be sociable’ → the generic human genus, [universal category; emphatic particle affirms certainty]) [103.2b] is surely in loss (لَفِى خُسْرٍ, la-fī khusr, লা-ফী খুসর; kh-s-r, ‘to diminish/perish’ → state of bankruptcy, [commercial metaphor; existential enclosure in deficit])

[103.3a] Except those who believe (إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟, Illa-lladhīna āmanū, ইল্লা আল্লাযীনা আ’মানূ; ʾ-m-n, ‘security/trust’ → internal conviction, [the exception clause; foundation of salvation]) [103.3b] and do righteous deeds (وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ, wa-ʿamilu-ṣ-ṣāliḥāt, ওয়া-‘আমিলুস সালিহাত; ṣ-l-ḥ, ‘to be whole/good’ → constructive action, [orthopraxy; external proof of internal faith]) [103.3c] and advise each other to the truth (وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْحَقِّ, wa-tawāṣaw bi-l-ḥaqqi, ওয়া-তাওয়াসাও বিল-হাক্ক; ḥ-q-q, ‘reality/fact’ → divine obligation, [mutual counsel; social responsibility for reality]) [103.3d] and advise each other to patience (وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ, wa-tawāṣaw bi-ṣ-ṣabr, ওয়া-তাওয়াসাও বিস-সাবর; ṣ-b-r, ‘to bind/restrain’ → active fortitude, [endurance required for truth; communal steadfastness])

Comments:

[103:1–3: The Divine Oath by Time declaring the universal loss of humanity save those united in faith, action, truth, and patience.]:

Classical commentators [al-Ṭabarī, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī, Ibn Kathīr] establish [the sufficiency of this Surah as a complete roadmap for salvation]. Connects to [Q 90:4] (emphasizes [struggle/labor]), [Q 4:69] (adds [companionship of the righteous]), [Q 31:17] (shows [patience in commanding good]). [Imām al-Shāfiʿī] states “[If people reflected on this Surah alone, it would suffice them]” ([Kitāb al-Umm/Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr]). Historical/literary context: [Meccan Period; concise rhetoric condensing the entire Islamic ethos]. Parallels [Psalm 90:12] declaring [the need to number days for wisdom], echoes [Ephesians 5:16] stating [redeeming the time], and mirrors [Dhammapada v.240] depicting [rust/corruption arising from oneself]. Use tradition-specific variants: Quranic (tafsīr-centered): The term al-ʿaṣr implies the squeezing of time (afternoon) signaling the end is near; al-Rāzī uses the metaphor of the ice-seller whose capital (time) melts away. Biblical/Christian: Compare to the "narrow gate" and the urgency of the "Last Hour". Hermetic/Gnostic: Resonates with the Platonic notion of time as the moving image of eternity, where the soul must extract "Truth" (Haqq/Aletheia) before the cycle closes.

Linguistic Archeology

asr ‹ʿ‑Ṣ‑R› = Proto‑Semitic *ʿaṣr “to press/squeeze” (~3000 BCE) → AnchorTrad AR √ʿ‑Ṣ‑R “time/afternoon/era” · Anchor: extraction by pressure · Chain: physical squeezing (grapes/olives) → the juice/essence extracted → the time of squeezing (afternoon) → Time as a finite, pressing resource → the declining epoch of history, Forms: AR: ʿaṣr, ʿāṣir, iʿṣār, muʿāṣir; HB: ʿaṣarah (restraint/assembly); SYR: ʿeṣrā (pressing); Eth: ʿaṣara · Counts: QUR ×1 (root freq); HB ×(cognates); GNT ×0; SYR ×freq · CONTEXT — QUR ① 103:1 — Wa-l-ʿaṣr → Oath by the declining day/time, implying the squeezing out of life’s opportunity ② 12:36 — aʿṣiru khamran → literal: "pressing wine" (Joseph narrative) ③ 78:14 — al-muʿṣirāt → "rain-clouds" (that squeeze out water) ; HB ① 1 Sam 9:17 (rel. root) — yaʿṣor → to restrain/rule (squeeze control) ; SYR ① Peshitta — ʿṣr → to press/oppress · ≈ CONVERGE: Semitic languages retain the physical sense of "pressure/squeezing"; QUR expands this to a metaphysical timeline (the era that presses humanity) · ≠ DIVERGE: Modern Arabic uses muʿāṣir for "contemporary", losing the eschatological tension of the Quranic oath · COGNATES: Heb ʿaṣar (restrain) · Akk eṣēru (draw/design/confine) · Uga ʿṣr (bird/trap?) · CONTRAST Cf.: dahr — infinite/unbound time (duration); waqt — specific moment; ḥīn — span/period vs. ʿaṣr (urgent/declining time) · ∴ AnchorTrad distills ʿaṣr as Time not as a neutral container, but as an active, pressure-filled force that depletes human capital (life) unless utilized.

khusr ‹Kh‑S‑R› = Proto‑Semitic *kh-s-r “to lack/fail” (~3000 BCE) → AnchorTrad AR √Kh‑S‑R “loss/diminution” · Anchor: commercial/existential deficit · Chain: reduction in weight/quantity → commercial loss (bankruptcy) → moral/spiritual ruin (losing one’s soul), Forms: AR: khusr, khāsir, akhsar, khasāra; HB: ḥāsar; ARAM/SYR: ḥsar; Akk: ḫasāru · Counts: QUR ×65; HB ×21; SYR ×freq · CONTEXT — QUR ① 103:2 — la-fī khusr → Humanity is immersed/enveloped in a state of total loss (commercial metaphor) ② 6:12 — khasirū anfusahum → "lost their own souls" (existential bankruptcy) ③ 2:27 — ulāʾika humu al-khāsirūn → "they are the losers" (final classification) ; HB ① Ps 23:1 — lo eḥsar → "I shall not want/lack" (God’s provision negates khusr) ② Ecc 1:15 — ḥesron → "that which is lacking" (vanity) ; SYR ① Lk 15:14 — ḥsar → "began to be in want" (Prodigal Son) · ≈ CONVERGE: QUR+HB+SYR universally use the root for lack/need/loss, often linking it to failure to attain a standard · ≠ DIVERGE: QUR elevates khusr to a cosmological state of the human condition (default state is loss), whereas HB often uses it for material lack or specific moral failings · COGNATES: Heb ḥāsar · Syr ḥsar · Akk ḫasāru · Ug ḫsr · CONTRAST Cf.: falāḥ — success/cultivation (the opposite of khusr); fawz — triumph/attainment vs. khusr (total forfeiture) · ∴ AnchorTrad crystallizes khusr as the default state of the human soul—a continuous depletion of capital (life) that results in bankruptcy without the investment of faith and action.
