Sūrah Maryam — Qur’ān
Bismillāhir Raḥmānir Raḥīm
• The Mystery of the Letters and the Mercy shown to Zechariah
[1] Kāf-Hā-Yā-ʿAyn-Ṣād (al-muqaṭṭaʿāt; disjointed letters → divine cipher signaling the inimitability of the text; interpreted by some as attributes: Kāf for Kifāyah/Sufficiency, etc.). [2] A mention (dhikr; dh-k-r, to remember/mention → reminder → revelation) of the mercy (raḥmat; r-ḥ-m, womb → tenderness → divine grace) of your Lord to His servant Zechariah (Zakariyyā; z-k-r, “Yahweh remembers”); [3] When he called upon his Lord (nādā; n-d-w, to call out/summon) a secret call (nidāʾan khafiyyā; kh-f-y, to hide/conceal → intimate/sincere invocation) [private supplication signals pure reliance]. [4] He said: “My Lord, indeed the bone has enfeebled within me (wahana; w-h-n, to slacken/weaken → fragility of age) and the head has flared (ishtaʿala; sh-ʿ-l, to ignite/blaze → spread rapidly) with hoariness (shaybā; sh-y-b, white hair), and I have never been, in supplication to You, my Lord, unblest (shaqiyyā; sh-q-y, distress/failure → disappointed/wretched) [past answers fuel present hope].” [5] “And indeed, I fear the successors (al-mawāliya; w-l-y, to be near/follow → kinsmen/heirs) after me, and my wife has been barren (ʿāqir; ʿ-q-r, to wound/hamstring → sterile); so grant me from Yourself (min ladunka; immediate divine presence) an heir (waliyyā; guardian/successor).” [6] “Who will inherit me and inherit from the family of Jacob (yarithu; w-r-th, to inherit → spiritual/prophetic succession), and make him, my Lord, pleasing (raḍiyyā; r-ḍ-y, content/accepted).”
• The Glad Tidings of John (Yaḥyā) and the Sign of Silence
[7] “O Zechariah, indeed We give you glad tidings (nubashshiruka; b-sh-r, skin/complexion → to peel/reveal → joy evident on face) of a boy whose name is John (Yaḥyā; ḥ-y-y, life → “he lives” or “he quickens”); We have not assigned to him before a namesake (samiyyā; s-m-w, high/name → equal/counterpart) [unprecedented status].” [8] He said: “My Lord, how shall I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached of old age (kibar; k-b-r, greatness/age) an extreme state (ʿitiyyā; ʿ-t-w, to be insolent/dry → withered/advanced decrepitude)?” [9] He said: “Thus said your Lord: ‘It is upon Me easy (hayyin; h-y-n, smooth/facile), and I created you before, while you were nothing (shayʾan; sh-y-ʾ, a thing/entity).’” [10] He said: “My Lord, make for me a sign (āyah; ʾ-y-y, sign/mark → miracle/verse).” He said: “Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights, [though] sound (sawiyyā; s-w-y, level/equal → healthy/without defect) [silence imposed despite physical capacity, signaling divine intervention].” [11] So he came out to his people from the sanctuary (al-miḥrāb; ḥ-r-b, to fight/defend → place of prayer/chamber) and signaled (awḥā; w-ḥ-y, to inspire/indicate swiftly) to them to glorify [Allāh] (sabbiḥū; s-b-ḥ, to swim/float → glide in praise/magnify) morning and evening (bukratan wa ʿashiyyā).
• The Mandate to John: Wisdom, Purity, and Piety
[12] “O John, take the Book (al-kitāb; k-t-b, to sew/write → scripture/Torah) with power (bi-quwwatin; q-w-y, strength/firmness → resolve/seriousness).” And We gave him judgment (al-ḥukm; ḥ-k-m, restraint → wisdom/prophethood) while a child (ṣabiyyā; ṣ-b-w, youth); [13] And tenderness (ḥanānan; ḥ-n-n, yearning/affection → compassion) from Us, and purity (zakātan; z-k-w, to grow/be pure → spiritual growth), and he was godfearing (taqiyyā; w-q-y, to guard/shield → pious/mindful) [divinely endowed character]; [14] And dutiful (barran; b-r-r, land/openness → righteousness/filial piety) to his parents, and was not a tyrant (jabbāran; j-b-r, to compel/restore → oppressor), disobedient (ʿaṣiyyā; ʿ-ṣ-y, to resist/rebel). [15] And peace (salāmun; s-l-m, safety/wholeness) be upon him the day he was born, and the day he dies, and the day he is raised alive (yubʿathu; b-ʿ-th, to send/resurrect).
• Mary’s Seclusion and the Angelic Apparition
[16] And mention in the Book, Mary (Maryam; m-r-m, poss. “beloved” or “rebellious/bitter” [Hebrew]; exalted status), when she withdrew (intabadhat; n-b-dh, to cast away/reject → withdraw to a side) from her family to an eastern place (makānan sharqiyyā; symbolic orientation) [spiritual seclusion]; [17] So she took, apart from them, a screen (ḥijāban; ḥ-j-b, to cover/block → partition). Then We sent to her Our Spirit (rūḥanā; r-w-ḥ, breath/spirit → Archangel Gabriel) and he represented (fa-tamaththala; m-th-l, to resemble/stand as) himself to her as a well-proportioned human (basharan sawiyyā; b-sh-r, skin/surface → mortal human). [18] She said: “Indeed, I seek refuge (aʿūdhu; ʿ-w-dh, to seek protection/cling) in the All-Merciful (bir-Raḥmān) from you, if you are godfearing (taqiyyā) [appeal to piety as defense].” [19] He said: “I am only a messenger (rasūl; r-s-l, to send/dispatch) of your Lord, to grant you a pure boy (ghulāman zakiyyā; z-k-w, purity/innocence).” [20] She said: “How shall I have a boy when no human has touched me (yamsasnī; m-s-s, to touch/contact) and I have not been unchaste (baghiyyā; b-g-y, to seek/transgress → prostitute/whore)?” [21] He said: “Thus said your Lord: ‘It is upon Me easy, and [We do this] to make him a sign (āyatan) for mankind and a mercy from Us; and it is a matter decreed (amran maqḍiyyā; q-ḍ-y, to finish/judge → inevitable decree).’”
• The Nativity: Agony and the Miracle of the Stream
[22] So she conceived him (fa-ḥamalat-hu; ḥ-m-l, to carry/bear) and withdrew with him to a distant place (makānan qaṣiyyā; q-ṣ-w, far/remote). [23] And the labor pains (al-makhāḍ; m-kh-ḍ, to churn/shake → birth pangs) drove her (ajāʾahā; j-y-ʾ, to come → compelled/forced) to the trunk of the palm tree (jidhʿin-nakhla). She said: “Oh, would that I had died before this and been a thing forgotten, completely forgotten (nasiyman mansiyyā; n-s-y, to forget → oblivion) [expression of extreme distress/shame].” [24] Then he [or Gabriel] called her (nādāhā) from beneath her: “Do not grieve; your Lord has placed beneath you a stream (sariyyā; s-r-y, to flow/travel by night → rivulet/noble child).” [25] “And shake (huzzī; h-z-z, to agitate/vibrate) toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you fresh dates (ruṭaban; r-ṭ-b, moist/soft dates), ripe (janiyyā; j-n-y, to pluck/harvest).” [26] “So eat and drink and cool [your] eye (qarrī ʿaynan; idiom for joy/comfort via tears cooling). And if you see of humanity anyone, say: ‘Indeed, I have vowed (nadhartu; n-dh-r, to vow/warn) to the All-Merciful a fast (ṣawman; ṣ-w-m, abstinence → silence), so I will not speak today to any human (insiyyā; ʾ-n-s, mankind).’”
• The Confrontation and the Infant’s Vindication
[27] Then she came with him to her people, carrying him (taḥmiluhu). They said: “O Mary, you have certainly brought a thing monstrous (fariyyā; f-r-y, to cut/fabricate → grave/unprecedented sin)!” [28] “O sister of Aaron (ukhta Hārūn; lineage or spiritual kinship), your father was not a man of evil (imraʾa sawʾin; s-w-ʾ, evil/badness) nor was your mother unchaste (baghiyyā).” [29] So she pointed (fa-ashārat; sh-w-r, to indicate/consult) to him. They said: “How shall we speak to one who is in the cradle (al-mahdi; m-h-d, to spread/bed → cradle) a child (ṣabiyyā)?” [30] He [the infant] said: “Indeed, I am the servant of Allāh (ʿabdu Allāh; ʿ-b-d, to serve/worship → slave) [Jesus speaks; miraculous defense]. He has given me the Book and made me a Prophet (nabiyyā; n-b-w, to rise/announce → one with news from God).” [31] “And He has made me blessed (mubārakan; b-r-k, kneeling/stability → divine favor) wherever I am, and has enjoined upon me (awṣānī; w-ṣ-y, to command/bequeath) prayer (aṣ-ṣalāt) and alms (az-zakāt) as long as I remain alive (ḥayyā; life).” [32] “And dutiful (barran) to my mother, and He has not made me a tyrant (jabbāran), wretched (shaqiyyā).” [33] “And peace is upon me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I am raised alive.”
• The Truth of Jesus and the Sectarian Dispute
[34] That is Jesus, son of Mary (ʿĪsā ibn Maryam; historical identification) — the word of truth (qawlal-ḥaqq; q-w-l, speech → statement; ḥ-q-q, reality/fact → absolute truth) concerning which they doubt (yamtarūn; m-r-y, to wrangle/dispute → doubt born of contention). [35] It is not for Allāh to take a son (waladan; w-l-d, offspring/child) — Glory be to Him (subḥānahu; s-b-ḥ, to float/remote → far removed from imperfection). When He decrees a matter (qaḍā amran; q-ḍ-y, judicial/executive decree), He only says to it, “Be,” and it is (kun fa-yakūn; k-w-n, existential command → immediate actualization) [absolute sovereignty negates need for biological procreation]. [36] [Jesus said]: “And indeed, Allāh is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him (fa-ʿbudūhu; ʿ-b-d, to serve/enslave oneself) ; this is a straight path (ṣirāṭun mustaqīm; ṣ-r-ṭ, path/way → direct route to salvation).” [37] Then the factions differed (fa-ikhtalafa al-aḥzābu; ḥ-z-b, to group/party → sects) amongst themselves; so woe (waylun; w-y-l, distress/curse) to those who disbelieved from the witnessing of a Tremendous Day (mashhadi yawmin ʿaẓīm; sh-h-d, to see/testify → momentous assembly). [38] How clearly they will hear and see (asmiʿ bihim wa abṣir; rhetorical wonder form) the Day they come to Us! But the wrongdoers (aẓ-ẓālimūn; ẓ-l-m, to displace → oppressors) today are in clear error (ḍalālin mubīn; ḍ-l-l, to stray/lose way). [39] And warn them (wa-andhirhum; n-dh-r, to warn/terrify) of the Day of Regret (yawm al-ḥasrah; ḥ-s-r, to uncover/fatigue → grief over lost opportunity), when the matter is decided; yet they are in heedlessness (ghaflatin; gh-f-l, negligence/lack of awareness) and they do not believe. [40] Indeed, We will inherit the earth (narithu; w-r-th, to inherit → final reclamation) and whoever is upon it, and to Us they will be returned (yurjaʿūn; r-j-ʿ, to return/cycle back).
• Abraham’s Gentle Invitation to his Father
[41] And mention in the Book, Abraham (Ibrāhīm; father of prophets). Indeed, he was a man of truth (ṣiddīqan; ṣ-d-q, truth/sincerity → one who confirms truth completely), a Prophet (nabiyyā). [42] When he said to his father: “O my father, why do you worship that which does not hear and does not see and does not avail you (yughnī; gh-n-y, to suffice/enrich) at all (shayʾan)?” [43] “O my father, indeed there has come to me of knowledge (al-ʿilm; ʿ-l-m, perception/certainty) that which has not come to you, so follow me; I will guide you to a straight path (ṣirāṭan sawiyyā; s-w-y, level/even).” [44] “O my father, do not worship Satan (ash-shayṭān; sh-ṭ-n, to be far/distant → rebellious spirit). Indeed Satan is to the All-Merciful (lir-Raḥmān) disobedient (ʿaṣiyyā; ʿ-ṣ-y, rebel).” [45] “O my father, indeed I fear that there will touch you a punishment (ʿadhāb; ʿ-dh-b, sweetness [ironic] or restraint → torment) from the All-Merciful [attribute ‘Merciful’ used to highlight tragedy of wrath], so you would be to Satan a companion (waliyyā; w-l-y, ally/protector).” [46] He said: “Are you averse (rāghibun; r-gh-b, to desire [with ‘an’ = turn away]) to my gods, O Abraham? If you do not desist, I will surely stone you (la-arjumannaka; r-j-m, to stone/cast out → execute or verbally abuse); and leave me (wahjurnī; h-j-r, to migrate/abandon) for a prolonged time (maliyyā; m-l-w, long duration).” [47] He said: “Peace be upon you (salāmun ʿalayka; s-l-m, safety/parting) . I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Indeed, He is ever to me Gracious (ḥafiyyā; ḥ-f-y, to honor/be solicitous → kind/welcoming).” [48] “And I will withdraw from you (aʿtazilukum; ʿ-z-l, to isolate/seclude) and what you call upon other than Allāh, and I will call upon my Lord; perhaps I will not be, in calling upon my Lord, unblest (shaqiyyā; sh-q-y).” [49] So when he had withdrawn from them and what they worshipped other than Allāh, We granted him Isaac (Isḥāq) and Jacob (Yaʿqūb), and each [of them] We made a Prophet. [50] And We granted them of Our mercy (raḥmatinā) and made for them a tongue of truthfulness (lisāna ṣidqin; idiom for high reputation/enduring praise), lofty (ʿaliyyā; ʿ-l-w, height/exaltation).
• The Elect: Moses, Ismail, and Idris
[51] And mention in the Book, Moses (Mūsā). Indeed, he was chosen (mukhlaṣan; kh-l-ṣ, to be pure/free → purified/selected exclusively) and was a Messenger, a Prophet (rasūlan nabiyyā; dual office). [52] And We called him from the side of the Mount (aṭ-ṭūr; mountain) the right (al-ayman; y-m-n, right hand/blessed) and brought him near for confidence (najiyyā; n-j-w, to whisper/confide → intimate discourse). [53] And We granted him out of Our mercy his brother Aaron (Hārūn) as a Prophet. [54] And mention in the Book, Ishmael (Ismāʿīl). Indeed, he was true to [his] promise (ṣādiqa al-waʿd; w-ʿ-d, promise → fidelity) and was a Messenger, a Prophet. [55] And he used to enjoin on his people prayer and alms, and was to his Lord pleasing (marḍiyyā; r-ḍ-y, accepted/content). [56] And mention in the Book, Idris (Idrīs; trad. Enoch). Indeed, he was a man of truth (ṣiddīqan), a Prophet. [57] And We raised him to a high place (makānan ʿaliyyā; ʿ-l-w, elevation → spiritual/physical ascension) [divine proximity]. [58] Those are the ones Allāh has bestowed favor upon, of the Prophets from the descendants of Adam (Ādam) and of those We carried with Noah (Nūḥ) and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel (Isrāʾīl; Jacob), and of those We guided and chose. When the verses of the All-Merciful were recited to them, they fell (kharrū; kh-r-r, to fall down/collapse) prostrate (sujjadan; s-j-d, to bow in worship) and weeping (bukiyyā; b-k-y, to cry) [mark of true receptivity].
• The Lost Successors and the Promise of the Garden
[59] Then there succeeded after them a successor (khalafun; kh-l-f, to come after → [pejorative] bad generation) who wasted the prayer (aḍāʿū aṣ-ṣalāt; ḍ-y-ʿ, to lose/neglect) and followed desires (ittabaʿū ash-shahawāt; sh-h-w, appetite/lust), so they will meet error/destruction (ghayyā; gh-y-y, deception/doom). [60] Except those who repented (tāba; t-w-b, to return) and believed and did righteousness; those will enter Paradise (al-jannah; j-n-n, garden/concealment) and will not be wronged (yuẓlamūn; ẓ-l-m) at all (shayʾan). [61] Gardens of Perpetuity (jannāti ʿadnin; ʿ-d-n, to settle/remain → Eden) which the All-Merciful promised His servants in the Unseen (bil-ghayb; gh-y-b, absence/hidden reality) ; indeed, His promise has been coming (maʾtiyyā; ʾ-t-y, to come → fulfilled). [62] They will not hear therein ill speech (laghwan; l-gh-w, meaningless talk/noise) but only “Peace” (salāman); and they will have their provision therein, morning and evening (bukratan wa ʿashiyyā; temporal phrasing denotes constant sustenance, not sun-cycles). [63] That is the Garden which We bequeath (nūrithu; w-r-th) to those of Our servants who were godfearing (taqiyyā). [64] [Gabriel speaks]: “And we [angels] do not descend except by the command of your Lord (amri rabbika). To Him belongs what is before us and what is behind us and what is between that; and your Lord has never been forgetful (nasiyyā; n-s-y).” [65] Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them — so worship Him and be constant (iṣṭabir; ṣ-b-r, patience → steadfast endurance) in His worship. Do you know for Him a namesake (samiyyā; s-m-w, equal/counterpart)? [Rhetorical challenge asserting absolute Uniqueness/Tawḥīd].
Text: Sūrah Maryam — Qur’ān
Segment: 19:66–98 (Part 3 of 3)
• The Denial of Resurrection and the Terror of Hell
[66] And says man (al-insānu; ʾ-n-s, generic human): “When I am dead, will I be brought forth alive (ḥayyā; ḥ-y-y, life)?” [67] Does man not remember (yadhkuru; dh-k-r, to recall) that We created him before, while he was nothing (shayʾan; sh-y-ʾ, thing/entity)? [68] So by your Lord, We will surely gather them (la-naḥshurannahum; ḥ-sh-r, to herd/muster) and the devils (ash-shayāṭīn; sh-ṭ-n, rebellious spirits); then We will bring them present around Hell (jahannama; poss. Hebrew gehinnom → place of torment) kneeling (jathiyyā; j-th-w, to kneel/crouch in fear or humiliation). [69] Then We will extract (la-nanziʿanna; n-z-ʿ, to pull out/tear away) from every sect (shīʿatin; sh-y-ʿ, party/followers) whichever of them was most intense against the All-Merciful (ar-Raḥmān) in obstinacy (ʿitiyyā; ʿ-t-w, insolence/arrogance). [70] Then We are most knowing of those who are worthiest (awlā; w-l-y, closer/deserving) of it to be burned (ṣiliyyā; ṣ-l-y, to roast/endure heat). [71] And there is none of you except he will come to it (wāriduhā; w-r-d, to approach water/arrive → inevitable passage/bridge) ; this is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed (ḥatman maqḍiyyā; ḥ-t-m, finality; q-ḍ-y, judgment). [72] Then We will save those who feared [Allāh] (ittaqaw; w-q-y) and leave the wrongdoers (aẓ-ẓālimīn; ẓ-l-m) within it kneeling (jathiyyā).
• Material Arrogance versus Divine Inheritance
[73] And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences (bayyinātin; b-y-n, separate/distinct → manifest proofs), those who disbelieve say to those who believe: “Which of the two groups is better in position (maqāman; q-w-m, standing/status) and better in assembly (nadiyyā; n-d-w, council/gathering place)?” [materialistic criterion]. [74] And how many have We destroyed before them of a generation who were better in furnishings (athāthan; ʾ-th-th, goods/wealth) and appearance (riʾyā; r-ʾ-y, sight/outward view)? [75] Say: “Whoever is in error (aḍ-ḍalālah; ḍ-l-l, straying) — let the All-Merciful extend (falyamdud; m-d-d, to stretch/prolong) to him an extension (maddā) [divine respite leads to gradual ruin] — until, when they see what they are promised, either the punishment (al-ʿadhāb) or the Hour (as-sāʿah; s-w-ʿ, time segment → Doomsday), then they will know who is worse in place and weaker in forces (jundan; j-n-d, army/support).” [76] And Allāh increases those who were guided in guidance; and the enduring good deeds (al-bāqiyāt aṣ-ṣāliḥāt; b-q-y, to remain) are better with your Lord for reward (thawāban; th-w-b, return) and better for return (maraddā; r-d-d, outcome).
• The False Refuge and the Lone Return
[77] Then have you seen him who disbelieved in Our verses and said: “I will surely be given wealth and children (waladā; w-l-d, offspring)?” [78] Has he looked into the Unseen (iṭṭalaʿa al-ghayb; ṭ-l-ʿ, to ascend/peer into) or has he taken from the All-Merciful a covenant (ʿahdā; ʿ-h-d, pact/promise)? [79] No! We will record (sanaktubu; k-t-b, to write) what he says and extend for him from the punishment an extension (maddā). [80] And We shall inherit from him (narithuhu; w-r-th) what he says [wealth/children left behind], and he will come to Us alone (fardan; f-r-d, solitary/singular). [81] And they have taken other than Allāh gods (ālihatan; ʾ-l-h) that they might be for them a support (ʿizzā; ʿ-z-z, might/prestige/power). [82] No! They [the false gods] will deny their worship (sayakfurūna; k-f-r, to cover/deny/ingrate) and will be against them an opponent (ḍiddā; ḍ-d-d, opposite/adversary). [83] Do you not see that We have sent the devils upon the disbelievers, inciting them (taʾuzzuhum; ʾ-z-z, to stimulate/provoke) with [intense] incitement (azzā; agitation)? [84] So do not hasten (lā taʿjal; ʿ-j-l, hurry) against them; We only count for them a [limited] count (ʿaddā; ʿ-d-d, countdown to doom).
• The Delegation of the Pious vs. The Criminals
[85] The Day We gather the righteous (al-muttaqīn; w-q-y) to the All-Merciful as a delegation (wafdan; w-f-d, honored guests/envoys); [86] And We drive the criminals (al-mujrimīn; j-r-m, to cut/sin) to Hell as thirsty herds (wirdā; w-r-d, animals approaching water) [ironic reversal: seeking water, finding fire]. [87] They do not possess intercession (ash-shafāʿah; sh-f-ʿ, to pair/mediate) except he who has taken from the All-Merciful a covenant.
• The Cosmic Abomination of Ascribing a Son
[88] And they say: “The All-Merciful has taken a son (waladā).” [89] Certainly you have done a thing atrocious (iddā; ʾ-d-d, calamitous/heavy)! [90] The heavens almost rupture (yatafaṭṭarna; f-ṭ-r, to split/cleave) therefrom, and the earth split open (tanshaqqu; sh-q-q, to crack) and the mountains collapse (takhirru; kh-r-r, fall down) in devastation (haddā; h-d-d, demolition/crashing ruin); [91] That they attribute to the All-Merciful a son. [92] And it is not appropriate (yam-baghī; b-g-y, to seek/befit) for the All-Merciful that He should take a son. [93] There is none in the heavens and the earth but comes to the All-Merciful as a slave (ʿabdā; ʿ-b-d, servant/worshipper) [universal servitude negates sonship]. [94] Certainly He has enumerated them and counted them a [full] counting (ʿaddā). [95] And all of them are coming to Him on the Day of Resurrection alone (fardan).
• The Promise of Love and the Final Warning
[96] Indeed, those who believed and did righteousness, the All-Merciful will appoint for them affection (wuddā; w-d-d, love/friendship → divine love implanted in hearts of creation). [97] So We have only made it [the Qur’ān] easy (yassarnāhu; y-s-r, ease) in your tongue that you may give glad tidings thereby to the righteous (al-muttaqīn) and warn thereby a people hostile (luddā; l-d-d, fierce in dispute). [98] And how many have We destroyed before them of a generation? Do you perceive of them anyone (aḥadin; ʾ-ḥ-d, one/single person) or hear from them a whisper (rikzā; r-k-z, faint sound/hushed tone) [total silence follows divine wrath]?
