Al‑Fātiḥah
• Invocation of the Divine Name and affirmation of Absolute Sovereignty
[1] In the Name (bi‑smi; s‑m‑w, elevation/mark → signifier of essence) of God (Allāh; ʾ‑l‑h, to worship/be perplexed → The Sole Deity), the Entirely Merciful (ar‑Raḥmān; r‑ḥ‑m, womb/tenderness → intensive/absolute mercy by nature), the Especially Merciful (ar‑Raḥīm; permanent/relational mercy in action) — Basmala functions as the primal oath and door to revelation. [2] [All] Praise (al‑ḥamdu; ḥ‑m‑d, laudation/gratitude → exclusive/generic praise) is [due] to God, Lord (Rabb; r‑b‑b, nurture/sustain/master → Sovereign Educator) of the worlds (al‑ʿālamīn; ʿ‑l‑m, sign/mark → distinct species/cosmos → all that exists besides God known through signs). [3] The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful — reiteration emphasizes grace precedes wrath. [4] Master (Māliki; m‑l‑k, possession/force → King/Owner) of the Day of Recompense (ad‑dīn; d‑y‑n, debt/obligation → judgment/religion → final accounting) — establishes eschatological accountability.
• The Covenant: Exclusive Servitude and Reliance
[5] You alone (iyyāka; rhetorical object‑fronting [taqdīm] signals exclusivity/tawḥīd) do we worship (naʿbudu; ʿ‑b‑d, smooth/subservient → slavery/service → total devotion), and You alone we ask for help (nastaʿīn; ʿ‑w‑n, aid/support) — grammatical shift from 3rd to 2nd person (iltifāt; sudden address) marks the worshiper’s entry into the Divine Presence.
• The Petition: Prayer for Rectitude and Distinction
[6] Guide us (ihdinā; h‑d‑y, to lead gently → spiritual direction/instruction) to the Straight Path (aṣ‑ṣirāṭ; ṣ‑r‑ṭ, to swallow/engulf → wide road) (al‑mustaqīm; q‑w‑m, standing → vertical/upright → shortest distance/integrity). [7] The path of those You have favored (anʿamta; n‑ʿ‑m, softness/delight → grace/prophetic blessing), not of those who have evoked [Your] anger (al‑maghḍūbi; gh‑ḍ‑b, intensity/wrath → deliberate violation/rejection) or of those who are astray (aḍ‑ḍāllīn; ḍ‑l‑l, to lose one’s way → confusion/error) — typology distinguishes the Guided from the Rebellious and the Misguided.
