Surah Al-Mu’minun (23:1–10) vs. Surah Al-Furqan (25:68–77)

  • Al-Mu'minun characterizes believers by what they DO: They humble themselves, they pay Zakah, they keep trusts.

  • Al-Furqan characterizes believers largely by what they DO NOT DO: They do not call on other gods, they do not kill, they do not commit adultery, they do not witness falsehood.

1. Surah Al-Mu'minun: The Active Pursuits (What They DO)

الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ

"They who are during their prayer humbly submissive." (23:2)

The Cultivators of Safety

(23:1): Indeed, the plow-splitters have cleaved-open harvest || Aflaḥa, F-L-Ḥ, split-soil/plow/cultivate ||; the seekers of rock-firm security || Mu'minūn, '-M-N, safety/trust/firmness ||. Certainly will the believers have succeeded ∴ Root F-L-Ḥ links spiritual success to agricultural labor; salvation is cultivated, not passively received. ∞ Soul-soil plowed by discipline yields the harvest of consciousness.

(23:2): Those who, in their connection-burnings/back-bendings || Ṣalātihim, Ṣ-L-W, bend-back/heat-straighten ||, are physically hushed like land after rain || Khāshi'ūn, Kh-Sh-', dust-settled/lowered-gaze ||. They who are during their prayer humbly submissive ∴ Ritual posture (Ṣ-L-W) is framed as somatic straightening by fire; submission is the stillness of dust. ∞ The ego-self vibrates; the witnessing-self is the stillness of the leveled earth.

(23:3): And those who, from the bird-chatter/mindless-noise || Laghw, L-Gh-W, bird-speech/nullity ||, are turning their flanks away || Mu'riḍūn, '-R-Ḍ, show-side/block-with-width ||. And they who turn away from ill speech ∴ Refusal of laghw is a physical turning of the torso ('-R-Ḍ) against null-vibration. ∞ Silence is not empty; it is a shield (flank) against the dissipation of spiritual focus.


The Guardians of Vitality & Boundaries

(23:4): And those who, for the pruning-growth/purification-cut || Zakāt, Z-K-W, prune-plant/grow-pure ||, are active-makers/laborers || Fā'ilūn, F-'-L, work/do ||. And they who are observant of zakah ∴ Charity is linguistically identified as horticultural pruning; cutting excess wealth forces vegetative growth. ∞ One must amputate attachment to increase the flow of the Life-Force.

(23:5): And those who, regarding their flesh-clefts/breaches || Furūj, F-R-J, gap/opening/genitals ||, are watch-guards || Ḥāfiẓūn, Ḥ-F-Ẓ, guard/preserve ||. And they who guard their private parts ∴ Sexual chastity is framed as guarding a physical breach in a fortress wall. ∞ The generative gates are sealed to prevent the leakage of sacred vitality (jing/ojas).

(23:6): Except upon their yoked-mates || Azwāj, Z-W-J, pair/yoke || or what their right-hands/strength-sides possess || Aymān, Y-M-N, right-side/oath/power ||, for then they are not bound-by-blame || Malūmīn, L-W-M, stitch-blame/accuse ||. Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed ∴ Lawful sexuality is defined by "yoking" (partnership) or "right-hand" (contractual strength/responsibility). ∞ Union within the vessel of covenant circulates energy rather than dissipating it.

(23:7): Then whoever hunts/seeks || Ibtaghā, B-Gh-Y, seek-out/swell-wound || behind/beyond that || Warā'a, W-R-Y, behind/hidden ||—those are the boundary-runners || 'Ādūn, '-D-W, run-past/aggress/race ||. But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors ∴ Transgression ('-D-W) is a kinetic sprinting past the marked limit of the pact. ∞ Desire seeking "beyond" the center creates the fracture of the self.


The Inheritors of Continuity

(23:8): And those who, for their safety-deposits || Amānāt, '-M-N, security/trust-object || and their witnessed-bonds || 'Ahd, '-H-D, witness/covenant/rain ||, are shepherds/grazers || Rā'ūn, R-'-Y, pasture-watch/tend ||. And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive ∴ Moral integrity is depicted as shepherding; trusts are livestock requiring constant grazing/watching. ∞ A promise is a living entity; the adept tends it lest it wander into the wolf's mouth.

(23:9): And those who, over their connection-burnings || Ṣalawāt, Ṣ-L-W, prayer/connection ||, intensively stand guard || Yuḥāfiẓūn, Ḥ-F-Ẓ, guard-watch ||. And they who carefully maintain their prayers ∴ Prayer is not merely performed but "guarded" like a perimeter or treasure; repetition reinforces the wall. ∞ The rhythm of return to the Source constitutes the heartbeat of the awakened state.

(23:10): Those—they are the surviving-heirs || Wārithūn, W-R-Th, inherit/remain-after ||. Those are the inheritors ∴ Success (verse 1) culminates in inheritance; the "cultivators" (F-L-Ḥ) finally own the land they plowed. ∞ We do not earn Paradise; we inherit our original nature once the dross is burned away. 


2. Surah Al-Furqan: The Restraints (What They DO NOT DO)

Verses 68–73 focus on refraining from major sins and reacting correctly to negative stimuli.

1. They Do Not Commit Shirk (Polytheism)

وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا آخَرَ

Walladhina la yad’oona ma’allahi ilahan akhara

"And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity." (25:68)

2. They Do Not Kill Unjustly

وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ

Wa la yaqtuloona an-nafsa allatee harrama Allahu illa bil-haqq

"And [who] do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right." (25:68)

3. They Do Not Commit Adultery

وَلَا يَزْنُونَ

Wa la yaznoon

"And [who] do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse." (25:68)

4. They Do Not Witness Falsehood

وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَشْهَدُونَ الزُّورَ

Walladhina la yash-hadoona az-zoora

"And [they are] those who do not testify to falsehood." (25:72)

5. They Do Not Engage in Undignified Speech

وَإِذَا مَرُّوا بِاللَّغْوِ مَرُّوا كِرَامًا

Wa idha marroo bil-laghwi marroo kirama

"And when they pass near ill speech, they pass by with dignity." (25:72)

لَمْ يَخِرُّوا عَلَيْهَا صُمًّا وَعُمْيَانًا

 The Scope of "Prayer":

In Al-Mu'minun, the focus is on Khushu (humility/concentration) and Muhafaza (guarding the prayer times).

In Al-Furqan, the focus is on Qiyam al-Layl (standing part of the night, mentioned just prior to the last 10 verses) and the intellectual response to revelation (not falling "deaf and blind" to verses). 

The Outcome:

Al-Mu'minun calls them "The Heirs" (Al-Warithun), implying they have a rightful claim to Paradise due to their deeds.

Al-Furqan rewards them for their "Patience" (Sabr), acknowledging that avoiding major sins and raising a righteous family requires immense endurance.

Deep Dive: The "Family" Verse (Furqan v. 74)

One of the most unique aspects of the Al-Furqan passage is verse 74:

"And those who say, 'Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous.'"
