Zechariah’s Prayer and the Angel’s Announcement of Yahya (Surah 3:38–41)

From Surah 3 (Al Imran), verses 38–41:

At that moment, Zechariah prayed to his Lord, saying, "My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication." So the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the sanctuary, saying, "Indeed, Allah gives you glad tidings of Yahya, confirming a word from Allah, and [he will be] noble, abstinent, and a prophet from among the righteous." He said, "My Lord, how will I have a son when I have reached old age and my wife is barren?" The angel said, "Thus [it will be]; Allah does what He wills." He said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." The angel said, "Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three days except by gesture. And remember your Lord much and glorify [Him] in the evening and the morning."

Glad Tidings of Yahya’s Birth (Surah 3:39)

So the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the sanctuary, saying, "Indeed, Allah gives you glad tidings of Yahya, confirming a word from Allah, and [he will be] noble, abstinent, and a prophet from among the righteous."

This brief statement emphasizes the divine promise of Yahya’s prophetic mission.

From Surah 6 (Al-An’am), verse 85:

Detailed Account of Yahya’s Virtues and Childhood Miracles; Unique Naming of Yahya; Yahya’s Righteousness and Compassion (Surah 19:2–15, 19:7, 19:12–15)

From Surah 19 (Maryam), verses 2–15:

[This is] a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zechariah, when he called to his Lord a private call. He said, "My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white, but never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy. And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so grant me from Yourself an heir who will inherit me and inherit from the family of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You]." [He was told], "O Zechariah, indeed We give you glad tidings of a boy whose name will be Yahya. We have not assigned to any before [this] name." He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?" The angel said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, ‘It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing.’" He said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." The angel said, "Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights, [being] sound." So he came out to his people from the sanctuary and indicated to them to exalt [Allah] in the morning and afternoon. [Allah said], "O Yahya, take the Scripture with strength." And We gave him judgement [while yet] a boy, and affection from Us and purity, and he was fearing of Allah, and dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant. And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive.
