 Surah 27: An-Naml (The Ant)

THE QUR'AN AS GUIDANCE

These are the verses of the Qur’an, a clear Book, serving as guidance and good news for the believers who establish prayer, give charity, and are certain of the Hereafter.

As for those who do not believe in the Hereafter, We have made their deeds appealing to them, so they wander blindly.

They are the ones who will have the worst punishment, and in the Hereafter, they will be the greatest losers.

You, [O Muhammad], are certainly receiving the Qur’an from One who is All-Wise, All-Knowing.

THE CALL OF MOSES

Recall when Moses said to his family, "I have perceived a fire; I will bring you news from it, or perhaps a burning torch so you may warm yourselves."

When he came to it, he was called: "Blessed is whoever is at the fire [noor?] and whoever is around it! Glory be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. O Moses, indeed it is I, Allah, the Almighty, the All-Wise."

He was commanded, "Throw down your staff!" But when Moses saw it moving as if it were a snake, he turned and fled without looking back.

"O Moses, do not fear. Indeed, messengers do not fear in My presence. However, one who has done wrong and then replaced evil with good—then indeed, I am Forgiving, Merciful."

Allah then instructed, "Insert your hand into your bosom; it will emerge white without blemish—[this is] among nine signs for Pharaoh and his people, for they are truly a rebellious people."

But when Our enlightening signs came to them, they said, "This is obvious magic." They rejected them wrongfully and arrogantly, even though their souls were convinced of them. See, then, what the end of the corruptors was.

SOLOMON AND THE QUEEN OF SHEBA

We certainly gave knowledge to David and Solomon, who both said, "Praise be to Allah, who has favored us over many of His believing servants."

Solomon inherited from David, saying, "O people, we have been taught the speech of birds, and we have been given from all things. Indeed, this is a clear favor."

Solomon's armies of jinn [spirits], men [insan], and birds [messengers] were gathered before him, marching in organized ranks. They marched until they came to the Valley of the Ants [language of earth?], where an ant exclaimed, "O ants, enter your dwellings so Solomon and his soldiers do not crush you unknowingly!" Solomon smiled, amused at her words, and prayed, "My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and my parents, and to do righteousness that pleases You. And admit me by Your mercy into [the ranks of] Your righteous servants."

He then inspected the birds and asked, "Why do I not see the hoopoe? Or is he among the absent? I will surely punish him severely or slaughter him, unless he brings me a clear excuse." The hoopoe did not take long to return, saying, "I have discovered what you do not know. I have come to you from Sheba (Saba) with certain news. I found a woman ruling over them, who has been given from all things, and she possesses a magnificent throne. I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allah. Satan has made their deeds appealing to them, hindering them from the path, so they are not guided to prostrate to Allah, who brings forth what is hidden in the heavens and the earth, and knows what you conceal and what you declare. Allah—there is no god except Him, the Lord of the Mighty Throne."

Solomon responded, "We will see if you have told the truth or if you are a liar. Take this letter of mine and deliver it to them, then step back and observe their response." The Queen [of Sheba] said, "O nobles, a noble letter has been delivered to me. It is from Solomon, and it reads: 'In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Do not be arrogant against me, but come to me in submission (as Muslims).'"

She asked her nobles, "Advise me in this matter; I would not decide without your presence." They replied, "We possess strength and great military power, but the decision is yours, so consider what you will command." She said, "Indeed, when kings enter a city, they ruin it and humiliate its honored people. This is what they do. But I will send them a gift and see what [response] the messengers bring back." [empirical evidence and diplomacy]

When the messenger came to Solomon, he said, "Do you offer me wealth? What Allah has given me is better than what He has given you. No, it is you who rejoice in your gift. Return to them, for we will surely come to them with armies they cannot resist, and we will expel them from their city in humiliation, thoroughly defeated." [exactly what queen sheba predicted and he got the understanding what the message all about]

Solomon then asked his assembly, "Which of you can bring me her throne [what is the nature of their theology] before they come to me in submission?"

A powerful jinn said, "I will bring it to you before you rise from your place; I am strong and trustworthy for this task."

But one who had knowledge from the Scripture said, "I will bring it to you in the blink of an eye."

When Solomon saw the throne placed before him, he said, "This is from my Lord's grace, to test whether I am grateful or ungrateful. Whoever is grateful is only grateful for his own soul, and whoever is ungrateful—then indeed, my Lord is Self-Sufficient and Generous."

He ordered, "Disguise her throne for her; we will see if she recognizes it or if she is among those who are not guided." [if she can still recognize, then she is rightly guided but yet somehow not in submission]

When she arrived, she was asked, "Is your throne like this?" She replied, "It is as if it were the one."

[Solomon said,] "We were given knowledge before her, and we were Muslims (in submission)." She had been hindered by what she worshiped besides Allah, as she was from a disbelieving people.

She was told, "Enter the palace." But when she saw it, she thought it was a pool of water and uncovered her shins. Solomon informed her, "It is a palace paved with smooth glass."

She declared, "My Lord, I have wronged myself, and I submit with Solomon to Allah, the Lord of the worlds." [Worshipping something else, [i.e Sun] other than the Most Precious, induced a profound SHAME and INSTANT SUBMISSION]

THE PEOPLE OF THAMUD AND SALIH

We sent to the people of Thamud their brother Salih, proclaiming, "Worship Allah." But they split into two conflicting factions. Salih asked, "O my people, why do you seek to hasten the evil [punishment] rather than the good? Why not seek Allah's forgiveness so you may receive mercy?"

They replied, "We see you and those with you as a bad omen."

He said, "Your omen is with Allah. Rather, you are a people being tested."

In the city, there was a group of nine men who spread corruption in the land and did not reform.

They plotted, "Let us swear by Allah to attack Salih and his family by night, then we will surely say to his guardian, 'We did not witness the destruction of his family, and we are telling the truth.'"

They devised a plot, and We devised a plot, while they were unaware.

See, then, what the outcome of their plot was: We destroyed them and their people, all together. Those are their houses, fallen in ruin because of their wrongdoing.

Indeed, in that is a sign for people who know. And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allah.

THE PEOPLE OF LOT

We also sent Lot, who said to his people, "Do you commit such immorality publicly while you see?

Do you really approach men with desire instead of women? You are truly an ignorant people."

His people's only answer was to say, "Expel the family of Lot from your city! They are people who keep themselves pure.

So We saved him and his family, except for his wife; We destined her to be among those who remained behind.

And We rained down upon them a devastating rain—how terrible was the rain upon those who had been warned.

ALLAH'S SOLE POWER AND CREATORSHIP

Say, [O Muhammad], "Praise be to Allah, and peace upon His servants whom He has chosen. Is Allah better, or what they associate with Him?"

Who created the heavens and the earth and sends down rain from the sky for you, by which We cause beautiful gardens to grow?

You could not have produced their trees. Is there another god with Allah? No, they are a people who equate others with Him.

Who made the earth a stable place, placed rivers within it, set firm mountains upon it, and put a barrier between the two seas?

Is there another god with Allah? No, most of them do not know.

Who answers the distressed one when he calls upon Him, removes the hardship, and makes you successors on the earth?

Is there another god with Allah? How little you reflect!

Who guides you through the darkness of the land and sea, and sends the winds [Bird, massagers] as good news before His mercy?

Is there another god with Allah? Exalted is Allah above what they associate with Him.

Who originates creation and then repeats it

and who provides for you from the heaven and the earth? Is there another god with Allah? Say, "Produce your proof, if you are truthful."

KNOWLEDGE OF THE UNSEEN AND THE HEREAFTER

Say, "None in the heavens or the earth knows the unseen except Allah, and they do not perceive when they will be resurrected." In fact, their knowledge of the Hereafter is confused; rather, they are in doubt about it; indeed, they are blind to it.

The disbelievers say, "When we and our forefathers have become dust, will we really be brought forth again? We were promised this before, we and our forefathers. These are just tales of the ancients."

Say, "Travel through the land and see what the end of the criminals was." Do not grieve over them or be distressed by their plotting.

They ask, "When is this promise, if you are truthful?"

Say, "Perhaps some of what you seek to hasten is right behind you."

Indeed, your Lord is full of grace for humanity, but most of them are not grateful.

And indeed, your Lord knows what their hearts conceal and what they declare.

There is nothing hidden in the heaven or the earth except that it is in a clear Record.

THE ROLE OF THE QUR'AN AND THE PROPHET

Indeed, this Qur’an relates to the Children of Israel most of that over which they differ. And it is truly guidance and mercy for the believers.

Your Lord will judge between them by His wisdom, for He is the Almighty, the All-Knowing. So trust in Allah; you are certainly upon the clear truth.

You cannot make the dead hear, nor can you make the deaf hear the call when they turn away.

Nor can you guide the blind out of their error. You can only make those hear who believe in Our signs and submit [as Muslims].

THE FINAL HOUR AND JUDGMENT

When the decree falls upon them, We will bring forth for them a Beast from the earth, which will speak to them, [testifying] that humanity was not certain of Our signs.

On the Day We gather from every nation a contingent of those who denied Our signs, they will be assembled in ranks.

When they arrive, [Allah] will say, "Did you deny My signs without encompassing them in knowledge? Or what was it that you were doing?" The decree will fall upon them for their wrongdoing, and they will not speak.

Did they not see that We made the night for them to rest in and the day to give sight? Indeed, in that are signs for people who believe.

On the Day the Trumpet is blown, all those in the heavens and on the earth will be terrified, except those Allah wills.

All will come to Him in humble submission.

You see the mountains and think they are stationary, but they will pass by like clouds—the work of Allah, who perfected all things. He is Acquainted with what you do.

Whoever comes with a good deed will have better than it, and they will be safe from the terror of that Day.

But whoever comes with an evil deed, their faces will be thrust into the Fire. "Are you recompensed except for what you used to do?"

THE PROPHET'S FINAL PROCLAMATION

[Say, O Muhammad,] "I have only been commanded to worship the Lord of this City [Mecca], who has made it sacred and to whom all things belong. And I am commanded to be of those who submit [as Muslims], and to recite the Qur’an."

Whoever is guided is guided only for his own benefit, and as for one who goes astray, say, "I am only one of the warners."

And say, "Praise be to Allah! He will show you His signs, and you will recognize them. And your Lord is not unaware of what you do."

Tafsīr

Surah an-Naml (The Ant), a Makkan surah, opens by establishing the Qur'an as clear guidance (hudā) and good news (bushrā) for believers (mu’minīn), defined by their prayer, zakah, and certainty in the Hereafter (Q 27:1-3). It contrasts this with those who disbelieve in the Hereafter, whose deeds are made attractive to them, leaving them blind (Q 27:4-5).

The surah's core is a series of prophetic narratives demonstrating Allah's power, knowledge, and tawhid (Oneness).

  1. Musa (Q 27:7-14): Begins at the burning bush, receiving the message of tawhid ("It is I, Allah, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise," Q 27:9). He is given the signs (staff/serpent, white hand) for Pharaoh. Pharaoh's people reject the clear signs (āyāt) as "obvious magic" (Q 27:13), denying them out of arrogance (ʿuluww) despite inner certainty (istayqanat-hā anfusuhum, Q 27:14). [Cross-refs: Q 20:9-24, Q 28:29-35. Biblical: Exod 3-4].

  2. Dawud & Sulayman (Q 27:15-44): This is the most detailed narrative. They are given knowledge (ʿilm) and express gratitude (shukr) (Q 27:15). Sulayman inherits from Dawud and is granted unique understanding: speech of birds (manṭiq aṭ-ṭayr) and ants (Q 27:16, 27:18). His smile at the ant's warning (Q 27:19) leads to a profound prayer for gratitude and righteousness. The story shifts to his kingdom, reviewing his armies (jinn, men, birds). The hoopoe (hudhud) is absent, finds the Kingdom of Saba' (Sheba), and reports on Queen Bilqis and her people worshipping the sun (Q 27:20-26). Sulayman sends a letter beginning with the Basmala (Q 27:30), commanding her submission (muslimīn, Q 27:31). Bilqis consults her chiefs, shows political wisdom (fearing kings' destruction, Q 27:34), and sends a gift, which Sulayman rejects, valuing Allah's gift (faith, prophecy) higher (Q 27:36). The miraculous transport of her throne—first by a powerful 'Ifrit from the jinn (Q 27:39), then instantly by one "with knowledge from the Book" (Q 27:40)—tests Sulayman's gratitude. Bilqis's own wisdom is tested: she recognizes her disguised throne ("as though it were it," Q 27:42) and, upon entering the glass palace (mistaking it for water), she declares her submission to the Lord of the worlds with Sulayman (Q 27:44). [Cross-refs: Sulayman's kingdom: Q 21:81-82, 34:12-14, 38:30-40. Biblical: Queen of Sheba's visit, 1 Kings 10:1-13, highlights wisdom/wealth; Qur'an emphasizes her tawhid].

  3. Salih (Q 27:45-53): Sent to Thamud, who split into two factions. The nine corrupters (rahṭ) plot to kill Salih and his family, swearing by Allah (Q 27:49). Allah counters their plot (makr), destroying them all (Q 27:50-51) and saving the believers. [Cross-refs: Q 7:73-79, 11:61-68].

  4. Lut (Q 27:54-58): Confronts his people for their lewdness (fāḥishah) and ignorance (tajhalūn). Their only answer is to mock his family's "purity" and expel them (Q 27:56). Allah saves Lut and his family, except his wife, destroying the people with a rain (maṭar) of punishment. [Cross-refs: Q 7:80-84, 11:77-83. Biblical: Sodom/Gomorrah, Gen 19].

Following the narratives, a powerful rhetorical discourse on tawhid begins (Q 27:59-64). It challenges the polytheists with a series of questions: "Is Allah better, or what they associate?" (ā-llāhu khayrun ammā yushrikūn). Each verse highlights Allah's exclusive power:

  • Who created heavens/earth, sends rain, grows gardens? (Q 27:60)

  • Who made the earth an abode (qarār), set rivers/mountains, and a barrier (ḥājiz) between seas? (Q 27:61; cf. Q 55:19-20)

  • Who answers the distressed (muḍṭarr), removes hardship, and makes you inheritors (khulafā’) of earth? (Q 27:62)

  • Who guides in darkness (ẓulumāt) and sends winds as good news (bushram) before His mercy (rain)? (Q 27:63)

  • Who begins creation (yabda’ul-khalq) and repeats it (yuʿīduhu), and provides from heaven/earth? (Q 27:64)

The discourse culminates by asserting Allah's exclusive knowledge of the unseen (al-ghayb, Q 27:65). The disbelievers are blind (ʿamūn) to the Hereafter (Q 27:66), dismissing it as "legends of the ancients" (asāṭīr al-awwalīn, Q 27:68).

The Prophet ﷺ is consoled (Q 27:70-81), told to rely (tawakkal) on Allah, as he is on the "manifest truth" (al-ḥaqq al-mubīn, Q 27:79). He cannot make the spiritually "dead" (mawtā) or "deaf" (ṣumm) hear the call (Q 27:80).

The surah concludes with eschatology (signs of the end):

  • The Beast (Dābbat al-Arḍ): When the Word is fulfilled, a Beast from the earth will emerge to "speak" (tukallimuhum) to people, confirming their lack of certainty in Allah's signs (Q 27:82). [Hadith: The Dābbah will appear in the end times, marking believers and disbelievers (Musnad Ahmad, Tirmidhi)]. -Typhon (Hellenic Myth), Beast from the Earth (Christian), Dābbat al-Arḍ (Islamic)

  • The Gathering (Ḥashr): A multitude from every nation will be gathered (Q 27:83), confronted with their denial (Q 27:84), and silenced (Q 27:85).

  • The Trumpet (Ṣūr): On the Day it is blown, all in heavens/earth will be terrified (faziʿa), except whom Allah wills. All will come humbled (dākhirīn, Q 27:87).

  • Mountains: Will pass like clouds (Q 27:88), demonstrating the perfection of Allah's "work" (ṣunʿa Allāh).

  • Recompense: Good deeds are rewarded better (khayrum min-hā) and bring security from the terror (fazaʿ) (Q 27:89). Evil deeds result in faces cast into the Fire (Q 27:90).

The final command (Q 27:91-93) is to the Prophet ﷺ: to worship the Lord of this sacred city (Mecca), to be among the Muslims, to recite the Qur'an, and to warn. The surah ends with a declaration of praise (al-ḥamdu li-llāh), a promise that Allah will show His signs, and a final reminder: "And your Lord is not unaware (bighāfil) of what you do" (Q 27:93).
