The Divine Mandate:
(36:1) Ya-Sin (yā sīn; vocative‑letters/symbolic‑sound).
(36:2) By the Quran (wa-l-qurʾān; reading‑gathering) full of wisdom (al-ḥakīm; restraining‑bridle/firmly‑knit).
(36:3) Indeed you (innaka; emphatic‑pointer) are among the messengers (al-mursalīn; released‑ones).
(36:4) On a path (ʿalā ṣirāṭ; swallow‑road/clear‑way) that is straight (mustaqīm; standing‑upright).
(36:5) A revelation sent down (tanzīl; successive‑descent) by the Exalted in Might (al-ʿazīz; strong‑fortress), the Merciful (al-raḥīm; womb‑bond).
(36:6) That you may warn (li-tundhira; bare‑signaling) a people whose fathers were not warned (mā undhira; signaled‑alert), so they are heedless (ghāfilūn; neglecting/unmarked).
The Fetters of Denial:
(36:7) The Word has proved true (ḥaqqa l-qawl; landed‑solidly/struck) against most of them, so they do not believe (lā yuʾminūn; secure‑trust).
(36:8) We have placed (jaʿalnā; set‑made) around their necks (fī aʿnāqihim; stalk‑throats) shackles (aghlālan; ring‑collars) reaching to the chins (ilā l-adhqān; beard‑bones), so their heads are forced up (muqmaḥūn; camel‑refusing‑water/rigid‑lift).
(36:9) And We placed (wa-jaʿalnā; set‑made) before them a barrier (min bayni aydīhim saddan; mountain‑dam/obstruction) and behind them a barrier (wa-min khalfihim saddan; mountain‑dam/obstruction) and covered them (fa-aghshaynāhum; enveloping‑drape) so they do not see (lā yubṣirūn; eye‑glance).
(36:10) It is the same (sawāʾun; level‑equal) to them whether you warn them (a-andhartahum; signaled‑alert) or do not warn them, they will not believe.
The Record of Traces:
(36:11) You can only warn (innamā tundhiru; bare‑signaling) one who follows (ittabaʿa; footprint‑tracking) the Remembrance (al-dhikr; invocation/mind‑mark) and fears (wa-khashiya; dry‑trembling) the Most Merciful (al-raḥmān; womb‑source) in the unseen (bi-l-ghayb; absent/hidden‑fold). So give him good tidings (fa-bashshirhu; skin‑flush/peel) of forgiveness (bi-maghfirah; helmet‑covering) and a noble reward (wa-ajr karīm; abundant‑compensation).
(36:12) Indeed, We give life (nuḥyī; breath‑reviving) to the dead (al-mawtā; lifeless‑still), and We write down (wa-naktubu; stitch‑record/book) what they sent ahead (mā qaddamū; forward‑step) and their traces (wa-āthārahum; earth‑footprints/relics). And all things (wa-kulla shayʾin; willed‑thing) We have enumerated (aḥṣaynāhu; pebble‑count) in a clear Register (fī imām mubīn; plumbing‑line/manifest‑leader).
The Messengers to the Town:
(36:13) Strike (iḍrib; hit/cast‑coin) for them a parable (mathalan; standing‑likeness) of the companions of the town (aṣḥāb al-qaryah; gathering‑settlement) when the messengers came to it (jāʾahā l-mursalūn; released‑ones).
(36:14) When We sent (arsalnā; released/sent‑forth) to them two, but they denied them (fa-kadhdhabūhumā; called‑liar), so We strengthened (fa-ʿazzaznā; reinforced/stiffened) with a third, and they said, "Indeed, we are messengers to you."
(36:15) They said, "You are only human beings (bashar; peeled‑skin/mortal) like us, and the Most Merciful has not sent down (mā anzala; descended) anything. You are only lying (takdhibūn; speaking‑falsehood)."
(36:16) They said, "Our Lord knows (rabbunā yaʿlamu; master‑knows) that we are indeed messengers to you."
(36:17) "And we are not responsible except for clear notification (al-balāgh al-mubīn; reaching‑delivery/manifest‑arrival)."
(36:18) They said, "Indeed, we see an evil omen (taṭayyarnā; bird‑divination/flying‑bad‑luck) in you. If you do not desist, we will surely stone you (la-narjumannakum; heap‑stones/execute) and there will surely touch you from us a painful punishment (ʿadhāb alīm; stinging‑torment)."
(36:19) They said, "Your evil omen (ṭāʾirukum; bird‑fate/lot) is with yourselves. Is it because you were reminded (dhukkirtum; pricked‑memory)? Nay, you are a transgressing people (qawm musrifūn; exceeding‑bounds/wasteful)."
The Man from the Farthest End:
(36:20) And there came from the farthest end (min aqṣā; distant‑edge) of the city a man running (yasʿā; pacing‑quickly/striving). He said, "O my people, follow the messengers (ittabiʿū l-mursalīn; footprint‑track)."
(36:21) "Follow those who do not ask of you a payment (ajran; hire‑wage/reward) and they are rightly guided (muhtadūn; finding‑way)."
(36:22) "And why should I not worship (aʿbudu; smooth‑service/enslave) He who created me (faṭaranī; cleft‑open/originated) and to Whom you will be returned (turjaʿūn; sent‑back)?"
(36:23) "Should I take other than Him gods (ālihatan; objects‑of‑worship)? If the Most Merciful intends for me some harm (bi-ḍurrin; emaciation/harm), their intercession will not avail me (lā tughni ʿannī; not‑enrich/suffice) at all, nor can they save me (yunqidhūn; rescue/snatch‑away)."
(36:24) "Indeed, I would then be in clear error (ḍalāl mubīn; lost‑way/straying)."
(36:25) "Indeed, I have believed in your Lord, so listen to me (fa-ismaʿūn; ear‑hear)."
The Aftermath and Regret:
(36:26) It was said, "Enter Paradise (udkhul al-jannah; garden‑enclosure)." He said, "Oh, I wish my people knew" (yā layta qawmī yaʿlamūn; would‑that‑they‑knew).
(36:27) "Of how my Lord has forgiven me (ghafara lī; covered‑helmet) and placed me among the honored (al-mukramīn; noble‑generous)."
(36:28) And We did not send down (mā anzalnā; descended) upon his people after him any soldiers (jundin; army‑troop) from the heaven, nor would We have done so.
(36:29) It was not but one blast (ṣayḥah; shout/thunder‑cry), and immediately they were extinguished (khāmidūn; silent‑ash/dead‑coals).
(36:30) Alas for the servants (yā ḥasratan ʿalā l-ʿibād; deep‑sigh/grief). There never came to them a messenger (rasūl; envoy) but that they mocked him (yastahziʾūn; sneer‑joke).
(36:31) Have they not seen (alam yaraw; eye‑see) how many generations We destroyed (ahlaknā; ruined/perished) before them, that they do not return to them (lā yarjiʿūn; turn‑back)?
(36:32) And indeed, all of them (kullun lammā; all‑together) will be brought present before Us (muḥḍarūn; made‑present/attended).
Signs in the Dead Earth and the Heavens:
(36:33) And a sign (āyatun; mark/flag) for them is the dead earth (al-arḍu l-maytah; lifeless‑ground). We revived it (aḥyaynāhā; breath‑life) and brought forth from it grain (ḥabban; seed‑kernel), so from it they eat.
(36:34) And We made (jaʿalnā; set‑placed) therein gardens (jannātin; covered‑enclosures) of date palms (nakhīl; sifting‑trees) and grapevines (aʿnāb; tendril‑fruit), and We caused to burst forth (fajjarnā; cleft‑open/gush) therein springs (min al-ʿuyūn; eye‑sources).
(36:35) That they may eat (li-yaʾkulū; jaw‑chew) of its fruit (thamarihi; produce/yield) and what their hands have worked (ʿamilathu aydīhim; hand‑labored). Will they not be grateful (yashkurūn; full‑udder/thank)?
(36:36) Glory be to the One who (subḥāna alladhī; floating‑praise/far‑removed) created pairs (khalaqa l-azwāja; shaped‑mates/kinds) all of them, from what the earth grows (tunbitu; sprout‑tooth) and from themselves (anfusihim; breath‑souls) and from what they do not know.
(36:37) And a sign for them is the night (al-layl; darkness‑wrap). We strip (naslakhu; skin‑flay/peel) from it the day (al-nahār; river‑flow/daylight), so behold, they are in darkness (muẓlimūn; dark‑shade).
(36:38) And the sun runs (tajrī; flow/course) to a resting place (li-mustaqarrin; settled‑dwelling) for it. That is the decree (taqdīr; measuring‑out) of the Exalted in Might, the All-Knowing.
(36:39) And the moon (al-qamar; white‑brightness), We have determined for it (qaddarnāhu; measured‑stages) phases (manāzila; descending‑stops) until it returns (ʿāda; went‑back) like the old date stalk (ka-l-ʿurjūn al-qadīm; curved‑branch/withered‑stem).
(36:40) It is not allowable (lā yanbaghī; not‑seeking/fitting) for the sun to overtake (tudrika; catch‑up/grasp) the moon, nor does the night outstrip (sābiqu; racing‑ahead) the day. And each (wa-kullun; all‑parts) swims (yasbaḥūn; floating/gliding) in an orbit (falakin; whorl/celestial‑sphere).
The Sign of the Ark:
(36:41) And a sign for them is that We carried (ḥamalnā; bore‑load) their forefathers (dhurriyyatahum; scattered‑seed/offspring) in the loaded ship (al-fulk al-mashḥūn; ribbed‑vessel filled‑up).
(36:42) And We created (khalaqnā; shaped‑cut) for them from its likeness (mithlihi; standing‑match) that which they ride (yarkabūn; mount‑saddle).
(36:43) And if We will, We drown them (nughriqhum; immerse/sink), so there is no screaming helper (ṣarīkha; cry‑for‑aid) for them, nor are they saved (yunqadhūn; snatched‑away/rescued).
(36:44) Except as a mercy (raḥmatan; womb‑bond) from Us and enjoyment (matāʿan; utility/goods) for a time (ilā ḥīn; until‑season).
The Refusal of Charity and Resurrection:
(36:45) And when it is said to them, "Fear (ittaqū; guard‑shield) what is before you (bayna aydīkum; between‑hands/front) and what is behind you, that you may receive mercy (turḥamūn; womb‑bond)."
(36:46) And no sign comes to them (mā taʾtīhim min āyatin; mark/flag) from the signs of their Lord (āyāti rabbihim; master‑marks) except that they turn away (muʿriḍīn; presenting‑side/ignoring).
(36:47) And when it is said to them, "Spend (anfiqū; tunnel‑out/distribute) from what Allah has provided you (razaqakum; provisioned/rain)," those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Should we feed (anuṭʿimu; taste‑food) one whom, if Allah willed, He would have fed? You are only in clear error (ḍalāl mubīn; lost‑way/straying)."
(36:48) And they say, "When is this promise (al-waʿd; appointment), if you are truthful?"
(36:49) They do not await (yanẓurūn; eye‑watch) except one blast (ṣayḥatan; thunder‑cry/shout) which will seize them (taʾkhudhuhum; grasp‑take) while they are disputing (yakhiṣṣimūn; antagonizing/quarreling).
(36:50) Then they will not be able (lā yastaṭīʿūn; obey‑capacity) to make a bequest (tawṣiyatan; joining‑command/will), nor to their people (ahl; tent‑family) will they return (yarjiʿūn; turn‑back).
The Resurrection Call:
(36:51) And the Horn (al-ṣūr; horn‑trumpet/form‑shaper) will be blown (nufikha; breath‑blown), and immediately from the graves (al-ajdāth; grave‑mounds) to their Lord (ilā rabbihim; master‑nurturer) they will hasten (yansilūn; flow‑quickly/trickle‑down).
(36:52) They will say, "Woe to us (yā waylanā; oh‑disaster/woe)! Who has raised us (baʿathanā; sent‑provoked/awakened) from our sleeping place (marqadinā; bed‑chamber)?" "This is what the Most Merciful promised (waʿada; appointment‑pledge), and the messengers spoke truth (ṣadaqa; hard‑truth)."
(36:53) It will not be but one blast (ṣayḥatan; thunder‑cry/shout), and immediately they all (jamīʿun; gathered‑mass) are brought present before Us (ladaynā muḥḍarūn; at‑hand attended/presented).
(36:54) So today no soul (nafs; breath‑self) will be wronged (tuẓlamu; darkened/oppressed) at all, and you will not be recompensed (lā tujzawna; repaid‑debt) except for what you used to do.
The Joy of Paradise:
(36:55) Indeed, the companions of Paradise (aṣḥāb al-jannah; garden‑enclosure) today are in occupation (fī shughulin; business/distraction), amused (fākihūn; fruit‑enjoying/jesting).
(36:56) They and their spouses (azwājuhum; mates/pairs) are in shade (ẓilāl; shadows/canopies), reclining (muttakiʾūn; leaning‑support) on raised couches (al-arāʾik; bridal‑thrones).
(36:57) For them therein is fruit (fākihah; rejoicing‑fruit) and for them is whatever they call for (yaddaʿūn; pray‑claim/summon).
(36:58) "Peace" (salāmun; wholeness/safety), a word (qawlan; speech) from a Merciful Lord.
The Judgment of the Guilty:
(36:59) "But stand apart (wa-imtāzū; split‑separate/distinguish) today, O you criminals (al-mujrimūn; cut‑off/sinners)."
(36:60) "Did I not enjoin upon you (aʿhad; covenant/bond), O children of Adam, that you not worship Satan (al-shayṭān; distant‑adversary/serpent)? Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy (ʿaduww mubīn; hostile‑aggressor)."
(36:61) "And that you worship Me? This is a straight path (ṣirāṭ mustaqīm; standing‑road)."
(36:62) "And he had already led astray (aḍalla; lost‑way) from among you a great multitude (jibillan; mountain‑crowd/nature‑throng). Did you not use reason (taʿqilūn; tie‑camel/restrain‑mind)?"
(36:63) "This is Hell (jahannam; deep‑pit) which you were promised."
(36:64) "Burn therein (iṣlawhā; roast/warm‑at‑fire) today for what you used to deny (takfurūn; cover‑seed/ingratitude)."
The Final Witness:
(36:65) Today We seal (nakhtimu; stamp‑ring/close) over their mouths, and their hands speak to Us (tukallimunā; wound‑speech), and their feet testify (tashhadu; witness‑presence) about what they used to earn (yaksibūn; gather‑gain/acquire).
(36:66) And if We willed, We could have obliterated (la-ṭamasnā; effaced/wiped‑blind) their eyes, then they would race (fa-istabaqū; compete‑run) to the path, but how could they see?
(36:67) And if We willed, We could have deformed them (la-masakhnāhum; twisted‑shape/transmuted) in their places, so they would not be able to proceed (muḍiyyan; passing‑forward) nor return.
The Reversal of Life:
(36:68) And whoever We grant long life (nuʿammirhu; life‑span/cultivate), We reverse him (nankishu; turn‑upside‑down/unravel) in creation (al-khalq; shaping/constitution). So will they not use reason (yaʿqilūn; tie‑camel/restrain‑mind)?
(36:69) And We did not teach him (ʿallamnāhu; marked‑sign) poetry (al-shiʿr; hair‑perceiving/feeling), nor is it fitting (yanbaghī; seeking/appropriate) for him. It is not but a remembrance (dhikrun; mention/pricking‑mind) and a clear Quran (qurʾān mubīn; reading‑gathering/manifest).
(36:70) To warn (li-yundhira; bare‑signaling) whoever is alive (ḥayyan; coiled‑snake/living‑movement) and that the Word (al-qawl; speech/verdict) may prove true (yaḥiqqa; land‑solidly) against the disbelievers (al-kāfirīn; seed‑coverers/ingrates).
The Sign of Livestock:
(36:71) Do they not see (yara; eye‑see) that We created (khalaqnā; shaped‑cut) for them from what Our hands have made (mimmā ʿamilat aydīnā; hand‑labored) grazing livestock (anʿāman; soft‑step/cattle), so they are their owners (mālikūn; grasping‑possessors)?
(36:72) And We tamed them (dhallalnāhā; lowered/made‑submissive) for them, so some of them are their mounts (rakūbuhum; riding‑saddle) and some of them they eat.
(36:73) And for them therein are benefits (manāfiʿ; useful‑yields) and drinks (mashārib; drinking‑places). So will they not give thanks (yashkurūn; full‑udder/thank)?
The Futility of False Gods:
(36:74) But they have taken (ittakhadhū; took‑for‑themselves) besides Allah gods (ālihatan; objects‑of‑worship), that perhaps they would be helped (yunṣarūn; aided/rain‑victory).
(36:75) They are not able (lā yastaṭīʿūn; obey‑capacity) to help them, but they are for them soldiers (jundun; army‑troop) brought present (muḥḍarūn; attended).
(36:76) So do not let their speech (qawluhum; word) grieve you (yaḥzunka; rough‑ground/sadness). Indeed, We know (naʿlamu; mark‑know) what they conceal (yusirrūn; secret‑whisper) and what they declare (yuʿlinūn; public‑open).
The Argument of Resurrection:
(36:77) Does man not see (alam yara; eye‑see) that We created him (khalaqnāhu; shaped‑cut) from a drop (min nuṭfatin; trickling‑fluid), then behold, he is a clear adversary (khaṣīm mubīn; quarrelsome‑opponent)?
(36:78) And he struck (ḍaraba; hit/cast) for Us a parable (mathalan; standing‑likeness) and forgot (nasiya; abandoned/forgot) his own creation. He said, "Who will give life (yuḥyī; breath‑revive) to the bones (al-ʿiẓām; skeletal‑frame) while they are crumbled dust (ramīm; decayed/rubble)?"
(36:79) Say, "He will give them life (yuḥyīhā; breath‑revive) who produced them (anshaʾahā; raised‑up/initiated) the first time (awwala marratin; first‑passage), and He is knowing of every creation."
(36:80) "He who made for you (jaʿala lakum; set‑placed) from the green tree (al-shajar al-akhḍar; moist‑wood) fire (nāran; heat‑light), so behold, you ignite from it (tūqidūn; kindle‑fuel)."
(36:81) "Is not He who created the heavens and the earth able (bi-qādirin; measuring‑power) to create the like of them? Yes, and He is the Knowing Creator (al-khallāq; supreme‑shaper)."
The Divine Command:
(36:82) His command (amruhu; matter/order) is only when He intends (arāda; sought/willed) a thing (shayʾan; willed‑object) that He says to it, "Be," (kun; exist/happen) and it is (fa-yakūn; so‑it‑becomes).
(36:83) So glory be (fa-subḥāna; floating‑praise/far‑removed) to Him in whose hand is the dominion (malakūt; kingdom/ownership) of all things, and to Him you will be returned (turjaʿūn; sent‑back).
