Tafsīr 103:1: The Oath by Declining Time
Ṭabarī and Qurṭubī affirm the oath wal-ʿAṣr (By Time/The Declining Day) signifies Time's immense value as the limited vessel for human deeds and the epoch of the Prophet ﷺ. Allah swearing by creation highlights its gravity. This connects to other oaths by time: 93:1 (By the morning brightness), 92:1 (By the night), and 89:1 (By the dawn). Revealed in Mecca to emphasize the urgency of the message against the backdrop of fleeting time. Tafsīr 103:2: The Default State of Loss
Exegetes like Ibn Kathīr explain al-insān (mankind) refers to the collective human condition, which, by default, is in khusr (loss, ruin, deficiency) by wasting Time, the capital of life. This connects to 95:4-5 (created in best form, then returned to the lowest), 14:34 (man is "unjust and ungrateful"), and 70:19 ("man was created anxious"). The Prophet's companions often recited this Sūrah before departing (al-Bayhaqī), reminding each other of this reality. Tafsīr 103:3: The Four Pillars of Salvation
Classical exegetes like al-Rāzī emphasize these four conditions are the complete path to escape the khusr (loss) mentioned in 103:2. 1) Āmanū (Faith), the internal foundation. 2) ʿAmilū ṣ-Ṣāliḥāt (Righteous Deeds), the external manifestation. 3) Tawāṣaw bil-Ḥaqq (Enjoining Truth), the communal duty to uphold faith. 4) Tawāṣaw biṣ-Ṣabr (Enjoining Patience), the communal duty to endure hardship in obedience. This connects to 90:17 (those who enjoin patience), 31:17 (Luqman's advice), and 9:71 (believers enjoin right). Imām al-Shāfiʿī famously stated, "If people were to ponder this Sūrah, it would suffice them."
